About us:
Riverside Submission is a community-based Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay-Thai academy serving Riverside, Ca. The academy offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Muay-Thai, and youth MMA. Our mission is to build discipline, confidence, physical fitness, respect, and strong character in the youth in Riverside and surrounding areas, while providing a safe and modern training environment. Riverside Submission is the longest standing Jiu-Jitsu school in the City of Riverside, since it opened in 2004.
As an academy, we believe our Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Muay-Thai, and Mixed Martial Arts is a tool for personal growth, self-respect, respect for others, and confidence. Our goal is to meet each student where they are and help them progress at their own pace. We strive to create a training environment that is safe, structure, welcoming, and a place where the students feel supported and challenged. Our youth program (in all sports) emphasizes anti-bullying, confidence building, and learning to handle difficult situations with calmness and control. These lessons expand beyond Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, MMA, Muay-Thai, and ultimately help students succeed in school, sports, and everyday life.
Our History:
Riverside Submission was founded in 2003 and was built from the ground up! Riverside Submission was founded by City of Riverside natives, Richard Arrey and Frank Romero, two (2) pioneers of the sport in Riverside, Ca. Riverside Submission was created in a garage by Richard and Frank where they started by training their kids and other family members. Shortly after, Riverside Submission was training MMA and had muay-thai coaches in this garage, ultimately running kids bjj, adult bjj, and all ages muay-thai classes. With Richard Arrey leading the classes with the youth program in the garage, with his son Xavier Arrey being a Jr. coach, the classes grew so large, they ultimately moved. In 2004, Riverside Submission moved to a location where they remained for approximately 19 years. Riverside Submission continued to run youth bjj programs, building one of the most prominent programs. Coach Richard, a Black Belt in BJJ under Aliosio Silva, started his kids program where both of his kids, Xavier Arrey and Kris Arrey both trained. In 2014, Richard Arrey took full ownership of Riverside Submission and rebranded the academy, no longer training professional fighters, but focusing a large part to the youth. This rebranding created Riverside Submission/Arrey Jiu-Jitsu, knowing the gym was created and coached by Richard Arrey, Xavier Arrey, and Kris Arrey.
Riverside Submission is not a commercialized Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school, rather it is a family owned and operated academy. This family feeling inside of this gym is unmatched. Riverside Submission is the longest standing bjj school in Riverside, CA.
Riverside Submission has been ranked in bjj and pankration across the nation over the past two decades. Coach Richard Arrey has built a program which has created youth to become leaders in society, such as law enforcement officers, collegiate athletes, firemen, and examples to society.
In 2023, Riverside Submission moved to their new location, where they are located at now, 10000 Indiana Ave #105. Riverside Submission has several coaches, all who have been with Riverside Submission since the start. This shows the strength of this program, as the coaches are built inside of this gym after becoming champions themselves.
Today, Riverside Submission/Arrey Jiu-Jitsu has three (3) active BJJ Black Belts coaching, two (2) active brown belts coaching, and assisted purple belts that coach.
